Byurakan

Ultra high-end 3 way loudspeaker
for those who don't settle for good enough

Byurakan Speaker Front

A good speaker makes music come alive.  A great speaker sounds like it's not there.

Designing a great loudspeaker is about so much more than just the absence of distortions or the flattness of frequency response, it's about delivering sound that is musically expressive and realistic, one that engages intellectually and emotionally. Combine that with a strong visual style and you get exactly what Arakelyan Acoustics is all about.

Byurakan, being the result of these ideas, is a 5 driver standmount speaker beyond the ordinary in so many ways - it sets a new high in the world of high-end.

Harmony of visual & sonic design

Far too many loudspeakers either look great, but sound not quite so good, or sound great, but can't match the looks...

True to the ethos of Arakelyan Acoustics, Byurakan does both, because for us aesthetics are just as important as sonic performance.

Flowing curves, radiused edges, subtle contours all come together to define a strong visual identity that goes in harmony with its sonic perfection, because every detail serves both aesthetic and acoustic purposes.

A machined solid wood baffle, reminiscent of the arcs in Xavier Corberó's residence or Ricardo Bofill's La Fábrica, creates an interesting appearance quite uncommon to any loudspeaker, which puts Byurakans into a category of functional artwork or audio jewelry, rather than electronic products.

Two side-firing passive radiators embedded into the main chassis made of our special composite material, come together with the top baffle slant to create an elegant, yet bold looking geometric silhoutte, moving it farther away from traditional speaker looks and likening it to more of a sci-fi spaceship.

As a final touch, the back side completes the visual style of Byurakan by showcasing the intricate crossover network clear cast in epoxy, that is hidden behind the enclosure when you're listening to music, but is always there to marvel at when you'd like so. As a nice functional bonus, the ever so important midrange and tweeter crossovers are now external to the enclosure, which, together with being casted in epoxy, makes them well isolated from any parasitic vibrations and microphonics.

Technology

While Byurakans visual appearance will hardly go unnoticed, sonically - they can disappear, letting you experience music as though it's not coming out of the speakers at all.

In terms of its driver configuration Byurakan represents a one-of-a-kind hybrid design: It implements 5 drivers in a 3 way configuration with a hybrid baffle, that is open for the tweeter, but sealed for the mid-range driver.

Both mid-range and treble frequencies are handled by planar magnetic drivers, which have numerous benefits compared to conventional dynamic drivers.

The mid-range driver is in a separate sealed chamber within the enclosure, which effectively decouples it from any interference from the woofer.

Vast soundstage,
yet precise imaging

The hybrid baffle makes Byurakan one of the most unique speakers in the world not only in terms of appearance, but also by combining multiple acoustic features into a single element.

First of all, it allows dipole operation for the tweeter, which enables deep and expansive soundstage reproduction, as well as provides great deal of transparency to the treble region.

Secondly, the baffle front-loads the tweeter with an embedded waveguide that controls the directivity of sound dispersion, giving the speakers a smooth off-axis response, not only horizontally, but also vertically, thus minimizing reflections from room surfaces.

The waveguide also allows the tweeter to play down to lower frequencies, which helps minimize the distortions even further.

Millions of colors.
Zero coloration.

One of the most difficult tasks for a speaker is getting the midrange to sound right, and by "right" we mean realistic and natural in terms of tone. It is very difficult to describe in words, but once you hear a truly natural midrange, you can't unhear it. There is a great chance you'll be hooked forever.

For the ultimate naturalness, transparency and instantaneous control we use a large-format planar magnetic driver with unmatched characteristics, that doesn't suffer from many of the shortcomings of conventional dynamic drivers, like power compression, slow transient response, phase issues, etc.

Able to handle hundreds of watts, we’re using only a fraction of its capabilities, which enables remarkable dynamic headroom, highest sound fidelity and ultra low levels of distortion.

You may think zero coloration equals uninteresting and boring presentation, but nothing could be farther from truth. Byurakan's lack of coloration manifests only in the realism and naturalness of tone, while it still retains a strong sound character, with rich harmonic expressiveness, dynamic contrast, depth and delicacy, conveying every nuance with remarkable effortlessness, a feature usually reserved only for huge tower speakers. These are all things you may have never known you wanted, until you hear for yourself.

Bass that speaks volumes.

Employing a newly developed 6.5" long-stroke woofer, designed and made in Denmark by PURIFI Audio, combined with not one, but two matching side-firing 6.5" passive radiators, we've achieved an unmatched bass performance in a bookshelf form-factor.

Fast, tight, thunderous and meaty, yet smooth and delicate at the same time - all while staying very low in distortions even when listening at high volumes.

From acoustic bass instruments full of natural textures to orchestral tutti or movie sequences packed with low-frequency effects, Byurakan delivers gripping and expressive bass no matter what you throw at it.

The bass is well extended, reaching as low as 37Hz, and even lower depending on the room and placement, which means you may not even need a sub-woofer, depending on type of music and your listening preferences.

Enclosure

Whereas the sound of a piano or a violin is shaped by the vibrations of the materials they are made of, in case of loudspeakers it's the exact opposite - the enclosure should remain as slient as possible to avoid any extra sound produced besides the drivers themselves. This is necessary to faithfully reproduce all kinds of instruments and sounds, rather than just some of them.

With such outstanding drivers we couldn't just throw them in an ordinary enclosure made of conventional materials, like MDF or plywood, that most of the speakers use. Instead, we developed a custom composite material we call ARMAT X™, that meets all of the requirements for such a demanding application - high stiffness and exceptional intrinsic damping at the same time.

Furthermore, using this material we were able to simplify the complex enclosure geometry into a unibody design, that is molded into a single piece, instead of being machined and assembled from multiple parts.

The end result is almost complete elimination of any smearing of details and allowing a precise reproduction of the most subtle nuances in music.

Crossover

Crossover is the heart and soul of any loudspeaker. Such an important, yet frequently overlooked part of the speaker is what shapes the sound character.

Designed from carefully selected top-of-the-line components, the Byurakan crossover creates a perfect marriage of the 3 drivers and provides a sense of coherency that is exclusive to very few speakers in the world, regardless of the price.

Special attention has been paid to phase behavior optimization and we have achieved relative phase error of less than 10% between the individual drivers around the crossover regions, which is one of the reasons for Byurakans ability to present such depth of soundstage with precise imaging, while sounding like a point source.

We’re so proud of our crossover design that we felt it would be a shame to hide it inside the speaker, so we put it on glorious display right in the back of the enclosure potted with clear epoxy for great visibility and vibrationless operation.

Below the crossover you'll see 2 pairs of gold-plated high-end binding posts made by WBT. You can use it in a regular single amplifier mode or you can bi-amp it, the choice is yours.

A stand that stands out

Completing the visual and sonic design of Byurakan is its matching stand, built from a variation of the same material that we developed for the speaker cabinet - the ARMAT X™.

Rather than just being put on the stands, the speakers are bolted on to the stand mount and form an incredibly sturdy union for exceptional bass performance.

Byurakan stands come equipped with ISOAcoustics GAIA III state-of-the-art isolating feet, which help further improve the sonic clarity and transparency.

Hand built in Armenia.

It takes 3 weeks of meticulous work to machine, assemble and finish a single pair of Byurakan speakers, much like the Rolls-Royce XWB Engine for Airbus 350, well almost... all done at our facility in Yerevan, Armenia.

Please note that our speakers are made-to-order, which ensures we can take ultimate care of each detail and provide great service to you, both pre and after purchase.
